Fred Swaniker is deeply passionate about Africa and believes that the missing ingredient on the continent is good leadership and good talent. Over a 13-year period, Fred founded and led 3 organisations to catalyse a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial leaders around the world: (i) Global Leadership Adventures (with sites in 16 countries around the world, >18,000 students so far) (ii) African Leadership Academy (one campus, 1,000 students so far) and African Leadership Network (2,000 CEO’s and entrepreneurs so far).
In 2013, Fred expanded his vision to an unprecedented scale by founding African Leadership University: an innovative, pan African institution with an ambitious goal of producing at least 3 million transformative leaders and entrepreneurs for Africa by 2060. ALU opened its doors in Mauritius in 2015 and launched a second campus in Rwanda in 2016.
Fred has been recognised by US President Barack Obama for his work in developing Africa’s future leaders. He was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, as one of the fifteen best emerging social entrepreneurs in the world by Echoing Green, as one of the top ten young ‘power men’ in Africa by Forbes Magazine, and as a TED Fellow.
