Ryan Baker, director of the Penn Center for Learning Analytics at the University of Pennsylvania, explains how data mining and Big Data can be applied to improve education. Through the data available on pupils and their learning, which has furthermore increased with distance education, it is possible to make learning more adapted to the individual needs of pupils, to assess pupils in multiple dimensions, including social ones, and even to analyse not only pupils but also learning institutions.
